"Could not have asked for better people to support us"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Accident & Emergency Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Acute Receiving Unit (Ward 2c)

(as a parent/guardian),

We were referred by the GP to the QEUH Children’s ER where we were seen quickly. The doctor in the ER was very kind and took the situation seriously and arranged for quick tests to be done on my 2 month old daughter. After these were done we were taken up to ward 2C. It was explained to us that my daughter would be put on IV antibiotics and we would be staying in the hospital while we awaited results. During this time in the ward a nurse named Rachel was very kind and checked in to see if we needed anything.

In the evening a doctor came in, accompanied by a nurse named Lauren, and explained that the test results suggested my daughter likely had meningitis and I got quite emotional at this news. Lauren was very kind and came back to check on me and my daughter throughout the night and at one point even gave me a hug which I really appreciated as I was there on my own with my daughter. Later that evening a doctor named Corrie came in and explained to me and my husband (who he was happy to let listen in via the phone) exactly what meningitis was and the next steps. He was very kind and his explanation really helped to calm us both down.

In the morning after our first night the doctor from A&E also came to check on my daughter and seemed genuinely happy to see she had improved. I thought this was very kind to see her follow up when she had spent such a brief time with my daughter the day before. This doctor was also very kind in A&E when I was getting emotional due to my daughter being in distress and also being taken for a lumbar puncture.

Overall I stayed in the ward for 2 nights and throughout this whole stay the staff were incredible but especially the nurses named Rachel, Lauren and Nadia. I was so worried about my daughter and throughout the stay they were caring, patient with my questions and very attentive whenever we needed anything. I could not have asked for better people to support myself and my daughter through this time.

Thankfully my daughter has made a full recovery. I’m incredibly grateful to all of the staff to helped my daughter and made our stay as positive as it could be.

It’s heartening to hear about the attentive care provided by our emergency and ward teams. From the initial quick response in the ER to the compassionate presence of Dr Corrie, Dr Rachel, and nurses like Rachel, Lauren, and Nadia, we’re proud to know our staff members could make such a positive difference during such a distressing time. They will be delighted to hear about the impact they made and your kind words of appreciation.

At NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, we’re committed to delivering not only high standards of medical care but also a sense of empathy and support, especially when our youngest patients and their families are concerned.
