"Restricted visiting"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

As a family we are struggling to work out why the visiting within 2a has changed?

We were led to believe visiting was open, as set by the Scottish Government and in line with their key principles it should not be restricted because of increased hospital activity.

Restricting visiting has been shown to have a negative impact on patient safety and care experience.

When querying this with 2a I was advised that due to some rooms being 7 bed wards instead of 6 they had to limit visiting times and visitors, which contradicts the SG policy.

Would appreciate some feedback and rationale around this.

Dear thankfulpatient01

Thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear you have encountered problems whilst visiting a loved one. I can confirm we do operate a person centred visiting approach however, restrictions are sometimes necessary due to a number of factors, such as infection outbreaks, clinical activity or other person centred matters. However, there should not be permanent restrictions in any of our wards.

As a result of your experience, we will be conducting a full review of our visiting guidance to ensure the needs of our patients and their visitors are being met. The findings from our review will help inform and update our current guidance to ensure it reflects the Scottish Government guidance on person centred visiting.

Once more, please accept my apologies for your experience. If you wish to discuss your experience further, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Kind Regards

Laura Harvey
