About: Maternity care / Labour suite maternity

(as a service user),

My thanks comes admittedly, many months later than it really should.

I have debated with myself for months if I should comment, and I feel based on the experience I had and the care shown by every person involved in my birth that it’s best I do.

I gave birth in QEUH in December 2023 (room2), which happened to be my partners birthday.

When I attended the night maternity unit, it was noticed that our babies heart rate wasn’t fluctuating the way that was to be expected, however after lots of cold water and some pain relief we were all good. Due to the initial concern, it was decided to admit me to the delivery ward. From there, I was placed into Kelly’s care and at shift change, assigned to Madeline and Maral   Throughout my time on in the delivery ward, Madeline and Maral kept both me and my partner up to date with anything that was happening and the expected plan.

Due to our baby passing meconium, what appeared to be a super army of staff appeared, that quickly vanished as soon as our daughter was born and had cried. I had issues with my placenta and had to go to theatre, and at this point Kelly was back on shift and reassigned to me. The poor soul must’ve thought she was going to be in for an easy night, but in true style I clearly had other ideas. I had issues with my temp and my oxygen dropping and heart rate slightly raised, I had to have an ECG and chest X-ray completed. When I said to Kelly I don’t do well when I’m hot, Kelly got some ice packs for me. Having someone who listened to you when you were at your most vulnerable is invaluable.

I would also like to say thank you to the anaesthetists who managed to place an epidural into my tiny back.

Although I don’t plan on having anymore children, I would trust every single person involved in our care with my life as it no point did I feel like I wasn’t involved in the care and decisions that were being made.

So to Kelly, Madeline, Maral and the

anaesthetists, thank you for everything you done and thank you for making my partners birthday extra special x

Dear cricketpc58,

Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your birth experience here at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Maternity Unit in Glasgow during the birth of your daughter in December last year.

What a lovely story to read and as a team, we always aim to ensure that women and their babies receive excellent, safe, kind and compassionate care. It is amazing to read how safe and included you were supported to feel by Kelly, Madeline and Maral during your labour and lovely that you had the continuity of Kelly supporting you when you had to go to theatre.

I am incredibly proud to read of how the midwives enabled you to feel listened to and involved you in decisions. Kelly, Madeline and Maral and the anaesthetic team will be delighted to read your feedback and I will ensure that your thanks and gratitude are passed on to them.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Gaynor
