"A lack of follow up"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 26, 27, 61 & 62 )

(as a relative),

My mum recently had her right hip replaced. Surgery went well and her aftercare was excellent, the several nights that she remained as an inpatient were fine and the nursing care was excellent.

There was no aftercare or follow up arranged outwith a phone appointment which isn’t until November time. She has, on the whole recovered well but has a worsening pain in her groin area. She has tried to phone to obtain advice on whether this is normal, to be expected or if something is wrong with her recovery. She has left 3 voicemails but has had no return contact and isn’t sure what to do next.

Overall the surgery has been a positive experience but currently she feels at a loss as to what to do. There is a lack of follow up after this procedure.

My husband has recently had a similar surgery in a different health board and had a face-to-face follow up appointment and an open appointment should there be any worries or concerns, offering him a lot more reassurance than my mum has been given. He has also been offered various physiotherapy appointments and my mum hasn’t seen anyone since her time in the ward.

Dear Knee Support

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your mother’s recent hip replacement surgery. I am pleased to hear that the surgery went well and that her inpatient care was excellent. However, I would like to apologise for the issues regarding her aftercare and follow-up. Can you please ask your mother to telephone the Orthopaedic Department on 0141 201 3735 or Ward 27 on 0141 201 3796.

Thank you

Nicole
