"Treatment of my partner"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

I took my partner to A&E  after we had been to an event because I think he had been spiked.

We got triaged relatively quickly, however, the triage only consisted of taking his oxygen levels, heart rate (which was elevated) and his temperature - no ECG was taken nor a blood test, which I thought would be important in this situation.

He was not himself at all and was clearly in pain and they offered him nothing for it.

I don’t feel as though the A&E staff took my partner seriously and the manner in which they spoke to him was rude and dismissive, as if he was a problem, not a patient.

We would not recommend this A&E department.

Dear doradodf83,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience at our A&E department. I'm truly sorry to hear about the distressing situation you and your partner faced during your visit.

I want to clarify that while we prioritize patient care, our department does not provide toxicology treatment. In cases like yours, we normally refer patients to the police department, as they can conduct the necessary tests for suspected spiking. We also encourage reporting such incidents, as they are serious crimes.

I regret that you felt the triage process was insufficient, and I apologize if our staff did not communicate with the compassion and respect you expected. Your feedback is important, and we will address your concerns with our team.

If you would like to discuss this further or provide more details, I would be more than happy to discuss this further with you. Thank you again for your feedback, and I wish your partner a swift recovery.

Best regards,

Dear doradodf83,

I just wanted to provide you with an update on the progress we are making based on the feedback you shared. We are actively working to improve our care, especially in situations like yours. We are reviewing and refining our triage process to ensure patients with suspected poisoning or spiking receive more comprehensive assessments and support, including the appropriate tests and pain management.

Additionally, we are focusing on improving the training for our staff to ensure that all patients are treated with the compassion and respect they deserve, and to ensure better communication throughout the process.

Thank you for your feedback, which is helping us drive these changes. We are committed to providing better care moving forward. If you have any further concerns or would like to discuss this more, please feel free to reach out.

Best regards,
Tamara
