"Long waits for emergency care"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Medical Ambulatory Care

(as a relative),

We were recently advised by my mother's GP to attend the Medical Ambulatory Care Unit.

We were triaged quickly but informed there would be lengthy wait for Dr review and a plan. We resigned ourselves to the fact it would be a wait but didn’t anticipate a frail ,elderly patient would wait in the A&E waiting room where there were around 40 other patients. The seats were hard plastic, uncomfortable and limited . Me and my brother had to stand . Other poor patients were lying on the floor.

Eventually we were seen at 3 am after waiting 10 hours on a hard chair. To be informed my poor mother was fit to sit to wait admission.

We were made sur until the next day on a chair not even on a trolley in the department .

Dear Bri5210

Thank you for sharing your recent experience of our Medical Unit here at University Hospital Wishaw. I am sorry to hear of your poor experience and would like to apologise for the wait your mother had within the busy ED waiting room.

I fully appreciate that you are concerned about the experience your mother encountered and I can assure you that we take all concerns from our patients and relatives very seriously in order to improve our services, amidst the current pressures the Emergency services are under. Unfortunately, due to bed capacity pressures on the site we do not have the ability for all patients to go to a cubicle space, which is very difficult to manage with the volume of patients accessing our services. This is indeed not the standard of care we aim tirelessly to deliver.

We are working on a range of improvements to reduce waits within the Emergency Department and will continue to progress with these initiatives.

I sincerely hope your mother’s health is improving

Regards

Faith
