"It was an absolute privilege to meet so many nice people"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Trauma and Orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I recently had a total hip replacement. I hadn’t had an operation since 1982 so we reasonably apprehensive about it. Strange to say, but I really enjoyed the day of the operation and my whole experience at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

It was an absolute privilege to meet so many nice people and real experts across the board.

I was discharged after one night in Hospital and 2 weeks down the line am making good progress, so am well on the way to recovery.

I assumed  the operation would be under general anaesthetic but having read the literature learned it is usually by epidural/spinal. I raised my concerns about not wishing to be aware of what was going on during the operation with Simon, the anaesthetist, who said he would recommend epidural/spinal and top me up with something which would mean I would not be aware of what went on, and that’s exactly what happened. Fabulous.

I would like to pay tribute to the Consultant Mr Wade, who was so impressive and professional in all he did. He inspired confidence telling me it was all about the fitting and he would fit it correctly.

I was so well looked after by the nursing staff led by Fran. There were too many to mention all but special  thanks go to Nolan and Jose for advice on crutches, dressing wound and putting on surgical stockings and Lauren for ensuring I took appropriate medication during my night in Hospital.

I am grateful to Paulina, the Physiotherapist, who got me up and about so quickly, giving me exercises, which I have done faithfully.

Last, but by no means least, I wish to thank Breagh, an absolute expert in her field with a lovely nature. So reassuring in guiding me through the process from  preop to the day of operation and follow up phone call to ensure all good.

I feel so grateful to the NHS for my excellent level of care. Truly wonderful. Saying thank you does not feel sufficient.
