"Unable to say how long I need to wait."

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Audiology

(as a service user),

I made an appointment as I had concerns about my hearing and asked for a hearing test.

At the appointment they checked and said I didn’t have wax in my ears and that I would need another appointment for a test. They could not tell me how long I would have to wait. This was a couple years ago.

I contacted them recently to ask when I could expect this assessment as my hearing is getting worse. I was informed that I had missed an appointment in not long after the original appointment. I had never received an appointment and am disappointed that there is no process in place to follow up non attendance as this lays the blame wholly with the patient when there has clearly been a fault in the communication process in this instance.

I now need to wait a few more weeks to have my ears checked again before being placed back on a waiting list for a hearing test.

As they are unable to say how long I will then need to wait again how will I know if I fail to receive the appointment again. This is now having a direct impact on my life and through no fault of my own I will be at the bottom of the waiting list.

Dear novemberdr44,

I am sorry to read about your experiences accessing the Audiology Service.

Usually when we arrange an assessment appointment this is confirmed by letter and text message. I am very sorry this has not been the case for you.

The current waiting time for hearing assessment is between 8 and 10 weeks following your ear check.

I would be very grateful if you would contact us directly on audiology@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk so we can confirm we have your correct details for future communications. I will also look into your previous appointment detail to ensure this does not happen again and you are fully informed of further appointments with our service.

Many thanks for contacting us,

Best Wishes

Joanne
