"Cared for us both so well"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Crichton Ward Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Play Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter recently needed to attend Crichton for day surgery and her first ever general anaesthetic.

We were met by a lovely receptionist (didn’t catch her name), who was so friendly and showed us where to go to wait to be seen.

SN Lorna then came and introduced herself to my daughter and then to me, she explained what we should expect to happen while we were in the department and she started to prep my daughter for going to theatre.

As she was first on the operating list for that day, it became a rush to get organised, but all the staff were fantastic at explaining what was going on to both me and my daughter.

Lesley Ann came to introduce herself and explain how her role as the Play Specialist would support my daughter right the way through the day. The attention to detail from Lesley Ann was perfect and she used my daughter's interests to ensure she felt as safe and cared for as possible whilst undergoing a new and overwhelming experience.

We then met Euan, and were heading to theatres, my daughter was apprehensive about getting into the theatre bed and about going to theatre, so it was decided that George (a very well loved teddy) would go in the bed instead. This made her feel at ease, and this made the entire process a lot easier on us both.

After my daughter went to theatre, Lesley Ann explained where I could go to wait on her and gave me a detailed explanation of what to expect next. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the Crichton staff and I felt the care was exactly what I needed.

In recovery we met Stacey, who supported me through this stressful time by just being by my side and listening to my over dramatic worries! She provided much needed reassurance and support whilst giving my daughter so much care and attention.

The Crichton team cared for us both so well and we will forever be thankful.

Dear BHMM201017,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your feedback on Care Opinion. We understand that people have busy lives so are always grateful that they have taken the time to share their stories. I am glad that you and your daughter had such a positive experience in Crichton ward and that you felt well treated by all of the staff you mentioned.

I manage the play team in the hospital and have shared your comments with Health Play Specialist Lesley-Ann who was also very grateful that you had taken the time to share this and was very appreciative of your comments about her.

Best wishes

Hi, My name is Iona and I am one of the staff nurses on the Crichton Unit.

Firstly I would like to thank you for taking time, to provide highly valuable feedback about our service. It is important to us that we do our upmost to get it right for all of our patients and this is a perfect example of that. I am very pleased to hear that yourself and your daughter had such a positive experience throughout your time with us. I will pass this feedback on to the rest of the team on Crichton.
