"An outstanding team"

About: St John's Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

My daughter had an accident at home and needed to be seen at St John’s A&E. The department was extremely busy, and the staff were run off their feet but this didn’t impact the care we received.

We were seen by multiple people who all took the time and made effort to engage with my daughter (who was pretending to be extremely shy). Dr Shizhang was so attentive and his attention to detail was all that we could ask for. He made sure I knew his plans and next steps for my daughter's treatment and continued to check in and update me on what was happening, he ensured that I was happy with any plans that were being made and if I had any concerns or opinions on what was happening I felt happy enough to raise these with him.

Dr Shizhang involved my daughter in her care, and stopped procedures when she had enough, giving her time to settle back down. He was brilliant with her and explained everything in a way that a 3-year-old could understand, and he let her help dress her wounds (which she was delighted with).

We also had the pleasure of being cared for by some brilliant nursing staff during our visit, Sam, Rachel, Kat (csw), and Kim all cared for us both exceptionally well and made a long and stressful day, a little easier for both me and my daughter.

I really hope that we aren’t back any time soon, but feel better knowing that if we do have to return to the department, that we will be cared for by an outstanding team.

Thank you all so much.

Dear BHMM201017

Thank you for taking the time to provide such positive feedback.

I am pleased that both you and your daughter where engaged with in such a positive manner, ensuring that you where well informed and that care was delivered in a way that allowed you and your daughter to feel comfortable. We aim to ensure that all care is person centred and compassionate.

I will ensure that your appreciation of this person centred approach is shared with Dr Shizhang and the nursing team who cared for you both exceptionally well and helped to make a stressful situation more comfortable.

I hope your daughter is recovering well.

Thank you very much for this feedback and I'm pleased to hear that the staff all allowed the best experience for you and your daughter during a time that can be daunting and sometimes frightening.

The department is very busy and the workload very challenging at the moment but positive messages such as this help maintain morale so we appreciate you taking the time and I have forwarded the message to the relevant staff.
