"All communication stopped after the course"

About: Children & younger people's services / Rushcliffe Healthy Family Team

(as a parent/guardian),

My son accessed the Healthy Families six week programme at his secondary school in the Rushcliffe Area. Rachel was fabulous and my son was able to open up to her and talk about his feelings and things he struggles with.

However, after the six weeks were up nothing else happened. It was reported that my son was ok and has a supportive family and would be ok. I advised that I thought he needed further help and asked for the mental health pathway. I was told he would be referred back to school who would help. School had not been helpful previously (they don’t seem to know how to help children with school based anxiety) and I said I didn’t want this to happen. All communication stopped and we were left feeling let down and confused what to do next.

Please strive to support children and their parents after the six week programme or signpost then where to get further help. My son is now doing group and individual sessions with Be U Notts who are fabulous and had we known sooner about them, we would have accessed their services sooner.

Firstly, I would like to apologise for the delay in responding to your story. Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback about yours and your son’s experiences with the Healthy Family Team. I am very sorry to hear that you felt communication ended after six weeks and that you were left feeling let down and confused about what to do next. The Healthy Family Team strive to offer a robust tier one service for our young people however we acknowledge that we can always do things better, and it is so valuable for us to learn from your experiences.

In future, we will make sure that all parents and young people are given the Healthy Family Team Advice Line telephone number and signposted to other helpful information and sources of support again at the end of the sessions.

We have recently added a further step to our tier one process so that as well as receiving a completion letter, parents also receive a telephone call at the end of an intervention. This is to ensure that parents and our young people are signposted on to the appropriate services if the issues have not resolved. It also ensures that parents are fully aware of the content of the sessions so that they can continue the work at home with the young person.

We have also introduced our 'Waiting Well' policy which includes all parents and young people being contacted throughout any waiting time and where interventions may have been interrupted through sickness/holidays or school absences.

Thank you again for telling us about your experiences, and I am pleased to hear that your son has been able to access further group and individual support.

I am more than happy for you to contact me via our Advice line if you wanted to discuss anything further,

Best wishes,

Rachel Channer
