"I think it needs more funding to maintain activities"

About: Antrim Adult Centre

(as a parent/guardian),

The first thing - there is a caring atmosphere in the centre, I can see it and feel it from most of the staff. I think there needs to be more consistency of staff in the rooms, especially for the young people with autism, to help maintain familiarity, trust and relationships. It's important for the staff to know their individual habits and how to manage them.

As a Mum I would like to know a bit more about what is involved in the training. My son has epilepsy, I would like to know if the training is specific to different conditions or is it generalised. If it was possible I would like to see what training is provided regarding epilepsy.

My son came to the centre when he was a teenager and he is now in his 30s. A lot has changed over the years. When he first came there were a lot more activities, I think it needs more funding to maintain activities.

There is a massive garden area which could be put to better use, like interaction with ball games, going outside on days of good weather. Maybe they could do some gardening.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, in relation to your son attending Antrim Adult Centre. I am pleased to read that you feel there is a caring atmosphere in the centre and from staff.

I agree, it is very important for staff to know individual service users and to ensure consistency. The team endeavor to maintain specific staff in specific rooms, which can sometimes be challenging due to absences etc.

With regards to training - there are a number of mandatory training courses that all staff are required to attend/complete, one being epilepsy. The epilepsy training has three elements - online training, emergency medication and Face to Face assessment with the epilepsy nurse, who then provides a hand over of each individuals plan. If/when there is a specific training need required for an individuals care, this is arranged. Your epilepsy specialist nurse can provide you with more detail if you request this.

I have noted your comments regarding indoor/outdoor activities and wish to advise that we are currently planning to develop garden spaces throughout all the Adult Centres, which will provide gardening opportunities etc.

Kind regards

Helen
