"Staff made the experience less scary and more manageable"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Children's Ward Forth Valley Royal Hospital / GP Out of Hours NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service)

(as a parent/guardian),

Our baby had a high temperature. I had phoned nhs 24 at around 11 in the evening and was directed to Forth Valley out of hours for an appointment at around 1am. From there we were promptly seen by the nurse practitioner who was reassuring and suggested that we visit paediatrics just in case. We went straight to the children's ward where we were met by a very friendly team. They were again very reassuring but wanted to take every precaution as she was so young.

Our baby became more unwell with a higher temperature and blood results showed that more tests were needed and meningitis was suspected. We stayed overnight and were well looked after. Our baby was started on antibiotics just in case the meningitis was bacterial. In the morning the consultant was very reassuring that we were probably dealing with a viral meningitis.  We stayed in hospital for 4 nights awaiting test results and remaining on the antibiotics. There were also some concerns so they were monitoring her liver. We were then able to leave the hospital and arrange some follow up appointments.

Throughout our time in Forth Valley Royal all members of staff were  excellent. The consultants were very knowledgeable but also great at communicating.  The doctors on day and night shifts were excellent. The nurses were friendly and well informed of our daughter's care. When we visited the ultrasound department the consultant was great with our daughter. Other staff who were cleaning or bringing food were all really caring and we felt really well looked after. The porters were really friendly too.

Although our daughter left hospital happy and healthy there was a point where we were incredibly worried that we wouldn't be leaving with the same happy and healthy little girl we brought in. The Forth Valley team made this experience less scary and more manageable. We feel like the care of the staff helped us not only in hospital but also with processing the experience after. My partner cannot speak about any of the staff without welling up. We are very grateful. Thank you Forth Valley Children's ward.

Good morning Worried Mum 27

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of your recent visit and interaction with Forth Valley. I acknowledge the responses from other colleagues who cared for you and your daughter and I respond on behalf of Out Of Hours.

I was sorry to hear your Daughter was unwell and had to spend a number of days in hospital, however I am pleased to hear that you were promptly seen within OOH and that our ANP provided reassurance and made the arrangements for your daughter to seen by our paediatric colleagues who were then able to provide the specialist care and treatment your daughter required.

I am pleased to hear that your daughter left hospital happy and healthy and I trust that she continues to recover well from her recent illness.

Regards
