"Audiology appointment"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Audiology

(as a service user),

Had a balance clinic appointment with audiology. The clinician was very informative and professional and I was impressed with their level of care.

I was however disappointed by the length of time I had to wait for this appointment, having been told the equipment has broken and new ones needed to be purchased. But this took around 6 months!!

The only observation I would make is that the room used had a very bright ceiling light directly above the patients reclining chair, meaning you had to stare directly at the light fitting throughout the appointment. This is easily remedied by moving the light fitting and would massively improve the experience!

The other huge disappointment is the amount of smokers congregating directly outside the main entrance of the hospital. It's ridiculous that this is not enforced as it is absolutely appalling for ill people to have to wade through thick cigarette smoke to get into the hospital! What are you doing about this please?

Dear John968

Thankyou for your feedback regarding your experience with our Audiology service.

May I offer my sincere apologies for the delay in you receiving your appointment and having to wait 6 months. Earlier in the year we had an unprecedented malfunction of our equipment for testing patients balance function. Not only did it take a some time to secure funds for new equipment, it also took several weeks for the equipment to be delivered, installed and our clinicians trained in using it. We fully understand the frustrations that all our patients experienced in the wait for their tests and again all I can do is apologise.

I have shared your thoughts regarding the lighting with my team and all fully agree that the position of the light should be changed and we will be arranging for this with our Estates team.

I also agree with you about the number of people smoking outside and will discuss this with our security team.

I am glad that the experience you had with the Audiologist was positive and again have shared this with the team.

Best wishes

Claire Banks

Head of Audiology
