"Peer recovery worker has been intrinsic to my recovery"

About: Community Mental Health (Dundee) / Perinatal & Infant Mental Health Community Nurses (Dundee)

(as a service user),

I had intrusive thoughts about harming my baby shortly after he was born and received fantastic care from the NHS Tayside perinatal mental health team

Jordan my mental health nurse was fantastic  when it was most acute but one of the things that has really been most helpful for my ongoing recovery has been the support of the Peer recovery worker Joanne

It has been so reassuring to be able to have the time of someone who can help reinforce the strategies I learned from Jordan, who can tell me it’s ok to feel the way I do - that it is normal , means that I still feel like I am properly still in the system, and could escalate any concerns if needed.

She gets me out of the house, has done footprint painting, has held the baby whilst I have cleaned my teeth and got dressed, and given me confidence and examples in how to play with him. It has been brilliant to have her support and has been intrinsic to my recovery

Dear Mum,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your involvement with the Tayside Perinatal Mental Health Team, and how you have found this helpful in assisting with your recovery.

In particular it was great to hear how having support from our peer recovery worker, Joanne, has given you the time and understanding to share your experiences and how she encouraged and supported your recovery. It was lovely to hear how your confidence and enjoyment has grown playing with your baby son and how I am sure he will have been enjoying this time with you learning and developing through play and creating memories together.

I will ensure your feedback is shared with Joanne, Jordan and the wider team as it is always nice to hear when mums are on the road to recovery and we have been privileged to be a part of your journey. I wish you well for the future and your continued recovery.
