"Staff shortages = minimal attention"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 3 North Ward

(as a service user),

I was admitted through A&E with an infection and osteomyelitis my stay lasted just over 2 weeks.

In my time there I witnessed staff shortages where patients were getting only minimal attention needed.

I had wounds which required dressing daily as per dressing plan provided by District nursing. The staff were unable to get the required dressings from pharmacy so I had to arrange to bring dressings in from my home stock, even then some staff seemed not to understand which dressings to use resting in a patch work of various dressings.

During my last 4 days in hospital I did not have one nurse from the regular ward staff instead they were made up of a miss match of agency staff from various parts of mainland UK.

How can best care be delivered when there is no continuity or care staff or the required dressing items available.

Also an ordinate number of beds were taken up by dementia and elderly patients awaiting care packages and care home places

Thank you for taking the time to highlight your concerns regarding your time as an inpatient on our ward. Our Staff strive to deliver the best care to all our patients at all times even during times of staff shortages and I sincerely apologise that our care was not up to the standard expected. I can only apologise that we were unable to provide the correct dressings to complete your wound care regime and this is something we will be looking at going forward. During times of ward staff shortages we use Bank and Agency staff and we expect the same high standard of care from them to our patients and again I can only apologise that this was not met. If you wish to discuss any of the above or any other matter regarding your time on 3 North please do not hesitate to contact the ward and I will be happy to go over any concerns you may have.

In the meantime I wish you well in your recovery.

Kind Regards

Norma Parker (Ward Manager)
