I went in for a flexible sigmoidoscopy with gas and air, I've never had one before and I was understandable nervous about it.
I received a phone call from a nurse called Jo a few days before my appointment which was invaluable, I was able to discuss my concerns, ask questions and just talking to someone in the department and hearing how empathetic and nice she was really put me at ease.
Upon my arrival to the hospital Kim showed me where to change and immediately bonded with me over recently having a baby, building rapport with me and helping me trust her, she then went through all the paperwork with me and made me comfortable.
Nurse in charge Vivian came in and helped me sign consent, it was reassuring how thorough and professional she was.
Clare then took me through to the procedure room where I met Robert who was doing the procedure, Robert was lovely, talked me through everything he was doing before he did it giving me a chance to ask questions and start taking the gas and air for any discomfort.
Clare (and student nurse Alan) chatted to me the whole time helping keep my mind of things, they are both lovely.
After the procedure Robert was able to tell me his findings immediately which was very helpful.
My only negative feedback is that they didn't have any gluten free food for me after the procedure, I have coeliac disease and hadn't eaten in over 24 hours so this wasn't great. I did have a packed lunch but I do feel the hospital, especially the endoscopy unit, should be able to provide gluten free food to patients who need it.
