"High Dependency unit"

About: Southampton General Hospital

I was transferred from the Spire hospital late on Saturday night following a quintuple heart bypass operation. The staff were excellent , very professional and looked after me well for two days. However I got no sleep die to the very noisy air-conditioning units outside the window

I was then transferred to a Cardiac ward where the night staff kept me awake talking . After 72 hours without sleep I self discharged ! I was refused my medication and my wife had to enlisted the help of my local practice and her persuasive skills to obtain my essential medication.

I could say the bins in the room on the ward had not been emptied and the toilet had not been flushed after the previous patient left , but since I was hallucinating by then I can't be sure.

Like any large organisation standards vary , I'm very thankfull for the great people who work in such a difficult environment.

Thank you for sharing your observations and feedback.

Noise and noise at night are important issues for us and we are striving to improve on these aspects to help our patients.

I am sorry that you took self discharge due to the challenges you faced.
