"Recurrent miscarriages - frustrated by referral service"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I have suffered three miscarriages (2 since July) but been told I don’t meet the criterion for referral to a recurrent miscarriage service because they are not consecutive. However, looking into the current guidance from NHS Glasgow and Clyde, recurrent miscarriage is defined as 3 or more first trimester miscarriages, and the RCOG updated guideline does not restrict the definition to consecutive miscarriage or miscarriage with the same partner (Management of Recurrent Miscarriage (708)).

My midwife made a referral but it was rejected by the consultant as it didn’t mean the criterion but according to the above guidance, I do. I don’t blame the consultant who is obviously running a very busy service (with a current waiting list of six months) and recognise that the NHS is stretched but I also feel very strongly about having to go through potentially a fourth miscarriage if it could have been easily prevented (if something was detected at my appointment). Despite having a positive experience with the midwife who was empathetic and supportive, I feel frustrated and let down by the cold and callous nature of the referral service. I feel like I don’t matter and no one really cares.

Update posted by runningbq53 (a service user)

As an update on the result of this, so far nothing has changed and I’m no further along than I was in September.

Despite the current NHS Glasgow and Clyde guidelines stating that I meet the criterion for referral to a recurrent miscarriage service, the department are seemingly still reviewing the guidelines and have not yet made any changes.

Final update:

Thanks to Nikki’s help in escalating my case, I was able to see a consultant. I’ve just received my blood test results and it looks like I have a clotting disorder, which essentially means my blood is ‘too sticky’ - a likely cause of the recurrent miscarriages. I’m deeply grateful to Nikki and my consultant for their support. I can now begin treatment, which will significantly increase my chances of a successful pregnancy. I am so thankful I pushed to be seen and hopeful that this will reduce the likelihood I will have to go through the pain of another miscarriage.

Dear runningbq53,

I sincerely thank you for updating me on how you got on.
