"Insufficient food"

About: Community Services (Adult Physical Health) / Community Inpatient Hawthorne Ward

(as the patient),

You have to order days in advance and then you get a small portion as there seems to be insufficient food for all patients i.e. a pork steak cut in half.

Some days the food you have ordered is not available and you are given an alternative which you may not like.

This is a rehabilitation ward and I consider food to be a main part of recovery.

This makes me frustrated as I wish to make a speedy recovery and consider food as part of this programme.

Thankyou for your care opinion post, I have discussed with the catering service manager who advised the following: Catering should be sending meals what are being ordered and it isn’t acceptable for items such as pork steak to be cut in half. The menus have been designed to ensure that the nutritional value of each meal is correct in line with the BDA requirements, and therefore portion sizes must be adhered to. There are occasions when catering do have to send a substitute dish, if their suppliers haven’t been able to fulfil the order, and catering should be sending a note with the deliveries to explain what the substitute is. It is for the ward staff to explain the alternatives to the patients effected in the event of this happening. It should not be a regular frequency though. I have communicated this to the ward staff so that they are aware if this occurs that they communicate

As the Ward Manager I will continue to monitor the process and ensure that meals are only to be ordered one day in advance, this will be discussed with staff to ensure that they are following process.
