"An episode of congestive heart failure"

About: Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Queen Alexandra Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

One afternoon recently I was playing a very competitive game of table tennis at the Community Centre. I suddenly became so breathless that I had to sit down and recover. I realised I needed to get this checked, but the next working day was a Saturday. I decided to go straight to A&E at QA hospital and arrived there at 0900.I was seen very promptly and taken through to a ward that is attached to A&E for patients over 85. I stayed there for one night and the team there soon had me well enough to go home. They arranged for me to be visited by one of the heart failure team nurses within three days, and to have an ultrasound scan of my heart function within 10 days followed by a consultant appointment a week later.

I was prescribed new medication and put under the care of the Heart failure nurses based at Havant. I have been seen or spoken to on the phone regularly over the ensuing months, and they have altered my drugs until they are happy with my progress. They are arranging for me to have a new ultrasound scan and consultant appointment in the months ahead. This happened because I ignored symptoms of fatigue for 6 months, because it is so difficult to get an appointment to see my GP.
