My husband called 111 recently due to my daughter not feeling well with a possible urine infection/thrush, swollen eyes, a rash and something that I thought it was a skin infection.
We were seen at the Kings Cross Hospital in Dundee in the evening.
The doctor did not give any importance to her skin symptoms (just asked me to use vaseline for her skin as they said it looked dry, although I said to him several times that I could see something yellow for what I thought it was a skin infection). They gave us oral antibiotics for her possible urine infection. They asked me on different occasions her age. At the end, they prescribed a medication. They wrote on the label and also told us to give her 10 ml 3 times a day for 3 days. I gave her this dose for 2 days until I checked the NICE guidelines and I realised the dose prescribed was wrong so she was taking much more than she should be taking at her age (3 years old). I checked with my pharmacist and also a GP from my daughter’s GP surgery and agreed that the prescription was overdosed so asked to change doses. I was reassured by both my pharmacist and my GP that this wouldn’t cause any medical issues to my daughter but I felt it was my duty to feedback to you with this information as this may have had serious implications in other circumstances. Not all patients check if the doses prescribed are correct.
The morning following the visit to out of hours, as I was not convinced by the advice given, I went to my daughter’s GP surgery to have her checked and ended up with treatment for different conditions (including a skin infection). This made me feel that we were not listened at all when we were seen by the doctor at Kings Cross hospital and I don’t feel they gave the care my daughter was needing.
I hope this feedback helps in terms of reviewing the standards of care.
