"Lack of care"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Elderly Mother in law waited outside in the ambulance for 6 hours to be seen. After 48 hours still in ED without being seen or having tests done for the suspected blood clot.

She needs assistance at the moment to visit the bathroom but instead of help the solution was to slap a diaper on her.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of the Emergency department at Craigavon area Hospital. The emergency department continues on a daily basis to be very busy and overcrowded with patients awaiting beds on the ward. This overcrowding means there is limited capacity to see and assess new patients causing a delay for both patients waiting in the waiting room and the ambulance off load time. We have recently changed our staff allocation and have a staff member allocated to both the ambulances and the waiting room. This member of staff carries out observation checks, administers medication and any other necessary care. I am very sorry that your mother was not accommodated better for her personal toileting needs on this occasion. I will share this with the staff to ensure that a patient doesn’t experience a similar situation. I hope your mother is recovering well.

Stacey
