I was referred to a six week course of exercise with the physiotherapy department at Bideford Hospital in Devon. I had recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of both hips which was causing me acute pain in walking. I must confess I went reluctantly, I couldn’t see how more exercise would help if I couldn't even walk without pain. However, I committed to the course and I’m glad I did.
The physiotherapist were very caring and observant. They explained how the set of exercises were designed to strengthen muscles that surround the joints affected by the arthritis and by doing that better it would support them. I was unsure but to my surprise it has worked..
The group was small so enabled individual care, each exercise could be tailored to what you could do. They explained how to progress (slowly is the key) and build up core strength. I loved the mix of the session, exercise followed by a short information session. I realised quite quickly that I had let my core strength and balance weaken, so that is my personal goal, to continue to build up my core strength and continue to improve my balance. I would encourage anyone who is referred to give it a go, stick with it, it will help.
