"I was given the wrong person's drugs"

About: Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38) Maternity care / Labour Suite Maternity care / Maternity & Paediatric Theatres

(as a service user),

I recently attended Ninewells hospital labour suite for an induction due to a maternal health complication. I cannot thank the midwives in labour suite enough for all their support and encouragement throughout our visit.

I also unfortunately had a visit to the emergency theatre very soon after for a retained placenta, the staff in the theatre were great and made me feel so at ease!

However post delivery I was moved to ward 38 and the experience went seriously downhill. I was approached by a midwife who asked to check my c-section scar although I had not had a section. They gave me medication for pain, did not check my name band, ask me my details or check my allergy status. Later that day I had requested to go home the same day and the midwife brought me my drugs for discharge. I questioned the midwife as I had not had a c-section and this seemed like a lot of drugs for a vaginal delivery. It was the wrong person's drugs and in fact I was being discharged with fragmin for 10 days opposed to the 6 weeks they had tried to discharge me with.

We then put our baby into their car seat and went home, at no point did she come to check our baby was in this correctly before we left.

I understand the ward is a busy environment but it's an accident waiting to happen..

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your baby. I am pleased you felt supported and encouraged by our midwifery colleagues in labour suite. I am sorry you had to visit theatre due to retained placenta, but I am glad to hear theatre staff were great and made you feel at ease.

I am sorry the level of care post op 'went downhill'. I am unable to pass comment, however, I am sure my midwifery colleagues will look at your feedback for reflection, learning and comment.

Thank you for providing feedback and I hope you are enjoying time with your baby.

Dear Mumyg54

I wish to congratulate on the birth of your and I hope you are both settling in well at home and enjoying the lovely times introducing a newborn baby into the family.

I wish to thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, it is really valuable to us as a service to receive your experiences, to support us to review current aspects of our care provision to adapt or facilitate improvements for all women and families accessing our service.

I am delighted your experience within labour suite and maternity theatre was positive, and I can hear you felt involved and central within your care provision, I will share this with our labour suite colleagues, it is always so encouraging to our teams, knowing the care they provided had such a positive impact on your birth journey.

I am sorry your care experience during your postnatal stay fell below your expectations, and I am sorry I cannot review the aspects of this experience to ensure any learning has been taken forward by the service, due to care opinion being an anonymous feedback platform. I would however encourage you, if you felt in a position to share further information, to contact tay.feedback@nhs.scot to enable the service to review your experience in further detail

I wish you and your family all the very best

Kindest regards

Steph Gardiner
