"Unacceptable behavior from triage nurse"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My dad was in terrible unbearable pain. He has a long long history of back nerve and muscle pain. He suffers pain 24/7 and just gets on with life as best as he can. He takes multiple medications to control pain including morphine.

One morning recently at 3am he was awake with a severe different kind of pain. When I seen him at 8am he was crawling along the floor in tears. Now I've seen my dad in pain most of my life and we knew this was different and serious. After speaking with the surgery they called an ambulance. That arrived pretty quick but we felt the paramedics were not really interested in the new pain and were focusing on his pain history. They were not overly concerned. However after chatting to us and then seeing my dad in severe pain, sweating, shaking they agreed to take him.

When he was seen by the triage nurse at Wishaw A&E, they were extremely rude and told him he shouldn't be there and should see his doctor as it's an ongoing problem. I feel that is not an acceptable way to speak to any patient who's in severe pain and needing help.

The horror stories about the NHS are getting more and more and it's getting to the stage where I don't really trust them.

It turns out he has kidney stones and was still in hospital 7 hrs later waiting on a scan.

Really disappointed in our nhs.

Dear lovecy99

Thank you very much for getting in touch and for your comments on this care opinion platform in relation to your dad’s experience whilst having to attend the Emergency Department here at University Hospital Wishaw.

I was sorry to read how unwell your dad was and I apologise that you didn’t feel supported by the Triage nurse and I will ensure that your comments are fed back to the Nursing team as we would always expect staff to be professional and friendly at all times and provide care and compassion for all patients attending our emergency services

I indeed hope that your dad’s health is improving

Best Wishes to you and your dad

Faith

Dear lovecy99

Many thanks for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion. I am so sorry to read about what happened to your dad. It sounds like he has had a really tough time of it recently with his back pain but to just get on with it shows some real strength of character. Kidney stones are a horrible thing and often describes by patients as one of the most potent pains they have every felt. It must have been a terrifying time for you all. I hope that the scan identified the location and they managed to either break them down or support your father as best possible until they passed.

Please accept my apologies for the experience that you describe in your story, I am sorry it appeared that the crew were not interested in the new pain. We do train our clinicians to get as detailed a history as possible and it is clear in this case that this had an adverse impact.

I hope that your father is better now and at home. I wish you all the very best.

Kind Regards

Alan
