"Listened to me and held my hand throughout the procedure"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I was referred to the women’s health department for a Colposcopy (extra investigation) after 3 positive tests for HPV infection which could potentially lead to Cervical Cancer.

I was incredibly nervous, emotional and scared. Memories from several years ago when different investigation tests had turned out to be breast cancer were running through my head.

Harry listened to my concerns and worries. Talked me through what was going to happen and what he would be looking for.

Janet & Debbie were so kind and supportive. Listening to me and literally holding my hand throughout the procedure.

In the end there was no problem cells and I was sent back to the normal screening program. And I needed a hug at the end of it all which Janet and Debbie kindly gave.

Dear Peony Whitfurrow,

thank you for sharing your positive experience of the Colposcopy service, it can be overwhelming attending an appointment at the hospital but it is lovely hearing that you felt supported and well informed. Your email will be shared with the team

Many thanks

Michelle

Dear Peony

I am very happy you had a good experience. I understand that women who are seen in colposcopy clinics are very anxious and I am glad we were able to offer reassurance.

We always try to approach our service users with kindness and empathy and I am happy this is well received.

Sincerely

Charalampos (Harry) Stamatopoulos

Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist
