"Day surgery on nose"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Blake Ward Musgrove Park Hospital / Day Surgery

(as a service user),

I have Tourette’s, autism and ADHD and attended Blake Ward to have surgery on my nose (day surgery). From start to finish, the staff went above and beyond. All of the staff were caring, professional, kind, polite, understanding and friendly, particularly Molly (nurse associate) which helped me feel more relaxed and able to cope better.

I explained that I have Tourette’s and autism as I worry that my Tourette’s will upset people. They all understood and knew how to make the hospital visit less stressful.

My sister was allowed to wait with me and they let us wait in a side room when other patients appeared to disapprove with my vocal tics. Being moved to a side room was very helpful and reduced my stress as I find it harder to control my tics and feel intimidated when people respond negatively to them. It also helped as I can find it difficult in waiting rooms with strangers and lots of conversations. I was allocated a nurse, Molly, who regularly checked on me and kept me updated. I was first into surgery which helped as I was getting nervous waiting.

I was scared when I woke up and a nurse was reassuring with me and calm, he dimmed the lights to help.

Everyone talked to me and explained everything. The staff were more personable whilst maintaining professionalism

Other NHS trusts could learn from the staff at Musgrove

Thank you
