"Unsafe practice- blood test sample blood…"

About: Bromley GP Alliance

I went to this surgery yesterday 1/8/24 for I was scheduled for blood test. I was directed to where the blood extraction will happen. I met the lady who did my blood sample for the test. She was kind and accomodating. She did all the information details check . She made me comfortable in the armchair. As she was putting the band on my left upper arm, having her prepared the needles and blood bottles she just suddenly took the needle and introduce into my vein and I realized she did not wipe my skin with skin wipes with alcohol. I am a nurse working for NHS and I do extract bloods for my patient in the ward. It was unsafe practice as any infection or bacteria would have lodged into my system and put me at risk of acquiring any infection and entered into my system. I believe the staff should be reminded that this practice is unsafe and she should be sent for refresher course. I am a nurse and I know the protocol. I would be worried for those who has no knowledge of the procedure and would be put at risk of acquiring infection should this practice continues. This practice should stop ASAP.

Dear Patient,

I’m so sorry to read through your experiences, but I must inform you that Knoll Medical Practice does not operate a phlebotomy service.

Phlebotomy services are carried out by staff members employed by the Bromley GP Alliance (BGPA), which is a completely separate organisation. We do share a building with the BGPA, the Health and Wellbeing Centre, but are two entirely separate organisations.

The BGPA can be contacted directly via telephone on 020 3930 0252 or by email at bgpa.admin@nhs.net. I would strongly suggest that you raise your concerns with the BGPA administrations team who can investigate the matter on your behalf.

I’m afraid that as the service is not operated by Knoll Medical Practice, and BGPA staff not employed by our organisation, I’m not able to provide any additional support or comment.

Once again, I am sorry to read through your experience but wish to reiterate that phlebotomy services are not carried out by employees of Knoll Medical Practice.

Thank you,

Callum McQue

Practice Manager
