"Giving birth at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I went to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to be induced due to a partial waters break. My story can be split into 3: my experience in the antenatal ward, my experience in the Labour ward and my experience in the post-natal ward.

My experience in the Antenatal ward was great; I had to have a pessary administered to start induction, but the midwife and student covering our ward room wafter us were patient and helpful, putting our minds at ease about what was to come.

When we moved to the Labour ward we also very well supported - two separate shifts of a midwife and student gave us excellent support during the labour and birth (forcep-assisted with full epidural)

Unfortunately our experience in the post-Natal ward was nowhere near as good - the midwife assigned to our room was brusque and unhelpful, stating that she did not have time to help with feeding even though I was completely numb with an epidural; I was just directed to syringe & bottle feed rather than breast feed as it was less work for them. We discharged ourselves as early as we could and went home after 2 nights

Dear lotiontc34

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback and congratulations on your new arrival.

I am sorry to read of your experience postnatally as this is not the care we aim to provide in NHS Lothian. I will feed this back to the postnatal ward manager to share with the staff.

If you would like us to fully investigate your experience could you please get in touch with our Patient Experience Team
