"I felt like I was begging for pain relief"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Surgery (wards 19, 20, 24, 26 &29)

(as a service user),

I had an infection so went to my GP and was given antibiotics, the next day - a Tuesday - it was even worse and I was in severe pain so I went back to the GP and was advised to attend Surgical Assessment at RAH Paisley. That was a great experience, I was seen quickly by lovely staff, I was assessed and received extreme pain relief before being moved into Surgical Receiving. That too was a good experience. The nurses were great.

I went down to surgery that day. The next day I was informed it didn’t work and that I needed a CT scan. I got that on the Wednesday. I was then moved to ward 24. This is when my care diminished.

I had to change my own pads and dressings. I felt like I was begging for pain relief. I should have been getting morphine  every 2 hours . I would ask say at 12 and at 12:45 I was still waiting, while being in severe pain. The lights for the ward were still blaring at 1am, and when I did try to get to sleep the nursing assistant decided this was a good time to strip the beds .

Another patient shouted every 2 mins but seemed to get the most attention off of all of the staff. I had no sleep in 36hrs apart from after my surgery. I couldn’t wait to get home on the Friday but that too has left me in limbo. I have a gaping hole where my surgery was which I can only describe as a fish mouth. I’m now having to wait to see what my GP thinks but surely this isn’t right.

Dear Tommi

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley. We appreciate your feedback and are deeply sorry to hear about the challenges you faced during your stay.

I am pleased to hear that your initial care in the Surgical Assessment and Receiving units was positive and that our staff were able to provide you with the necessary pain relief and support. However, please accept my apologies for your experience in Ward 24 and for the upset and distress this caused. Our goal is to provide the highest standard of care to all our patients, and your experience highlights areas where we need to improve.

I would be grateful if you could contact my colleague Sharlene Baillie, Lead Nurse, to discuss this further. If you could email Sharlene @ sharlene.baillie@nhs.scot

Thank you

Nicole
