"12 week scan experience"

About: Gynaecology / Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic Maternity care / Maternity Assessment Unit

(as the patient),

I was due to have my 12 weeks scan in Perth last week however I was called to say I would need to come to Ninewells instead on a different day, as they could no longer do my scan in Perth on the original day.

Due to the last-minute change, my partner could not get time off work, so I had to attend the appointment alone.

The person carrying out the scan I had, I found to be very cold and not comforting at all in what is a high anxiety situation for any parent.

There was no chat or questions at the start to get to know my situation or relax me, and when doing the scan they were pressing down so hard that even now, 4 days later, that area is still tender to touch.

Unfortunately, baby was not cooperating, so they were unable to get any measurements, but the whole scan when we were trying to get baby to move into a good position, the staff member was fussing and puffing the whole time, which made me feel so uncomfortable and like I was doing something wrong.

Since the scan I have had cramping and been losing what I think is bits of my mucus plug which I found concerning, so I called the EPU at Ninewells and again, didn't really get a caring or helpful response. I was just told if I'm in pain I should call my GP. They said that as they knew my pregnancy was not ectopic, they weren't concerned. There was no attempt to assure me of what I'm going through is normal or not.

The whole situation has made me worry more about what is to come. I have to go back to Ninewells for another scan at 16 weeks to try and get measurements and I can't help but worry I will get the same member of staff and another negative experience.

Dear yellowkm47

I wish to thank you for taking the time to share your experience within our USS services, it is really valuable to us as a service to continually improve and be guided by women and families accessing care provision.

I would like to apologise your original scan was cancelled in Perth at short notice, we have experienced some challenges within this department over the summer and have continued to prioritise pregnancy screening, however, unfortunately at times this has meant we were not in a position to offer USS services within your locality, and have centralised some provision for a short period of time to ensure equity to all women and families accessing our service.

I am sorry your experience during your scan did not meet your expectations and we could unfortunately not offer 1st trimester screening. We are continually supporting work to develop the uss service, and this includes focus work within the screening service to support full opportunity to offer 1st timester screening during your pregnancy in line with the national standards.

If you would wish to share further information to the service to review your concerns in more detail from your uss experience, please email tay.feedback@nhs.scot, where we can contact you directly.

I wish you all the very best

Kindest regards

Steph Gardiner
