"Doctors were not present"

About: Medicine for the Elderly / Acute Frailty Unit

(as a relative),

Doctors behaved distantly and without any care. We felt bullied.

Nursing staff had to cover for lack of doctors and were unable to treat patients because doctors were not present and had not prescribed pain medication.

When doctors did show up, they were uncaring and rude, rough and unkind. Did not listen to the patient or their relatives, abrupt, and unresponsive and robotic.

Nurses were lovely but overworked and too few of them. Radio provided too much background noise. Horrible experience and made us all feel sad and scared. Not, we all thought, what the ward was set up to achieve at all.

Good Afternoon,

My Name is Martha and I am a Charge Nurse in Ward 36 in Ninewells. Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to provide this feedback, I am so sorry to read of your experience and noticed that there was not a response yet. Please accept my apologies for this and for your experience.

I am sorry to hear that you felt bullied and that people were unkind but thank you for your kind wards towards the nursing team and recognition that there is not always enough of us. Thank you for your feedback about the radio, this is sometimes used to create background noise to improve confidentiality to stop all conversations being overheard, however, I appreciate this may feel too much for people and we are always willing to turn it down or off as to what the patients prefer so please do not hesitate to let us know in the future.

I will ensure that your feedback is shared with the nursing and medical teams across medicine for the elderly, however, without more detail it is difficult for me to look into this further as there are multiple wards, doctors and nurses who care for our elderly patients. If you would like to discuss this further or provide any further details to enable more tailored feedback please do not hesitate to get in touch with myself on 01382 633836 or martha.collir@nhs.scot.

Thanks again and best wishes to yourself and your relative.

Martha
