"Early pregnancy and maternity wards"

About: Maternity Care / Day Assessment Unit University Hospital Wishaw / Early Pregnancy Assessment Service University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care

(as a service user),

I’m only getting round to writing this review now but in July 2022 I went for my 12 week scan with my 2nd baby (absolutely no issues with 1st) to be told that my baby had passed at 8 weeks. The pain I felt was like nothing before and 5 days later I opted for a D&C as baby wasn’t passing naturally. All the staff were amazing and treated me with care, dignity and empathy on which was a horrific time not wanting to let go and feeling so hopeless.

Two weeks later I received a call from early pregnancy to say that pathology had been done due to some irregularities detected during the D&C and I was informed that I had a partial molar pregnancy and was sent some information which detailed what I was dealing with and what would happen next.

I was then referred to the molar pregnancy unit in Dundee where I was advised I would need to submit a few rounds of blood and urine and dependant on that, worst case scenario I would have to go for chemo. Thankfully I was all clear which was amazing and 2 months later I found out I was pregnant again!

Due to the partial molar pregnancy I was closely monitored and visited Wishaw for extra scans which was so reassuring. I advised the staff that I was petrified of scans and they were all so reassuring and kind. The pregnancy didn’t run smoothly and I had to inject blood thinners (due to my autoimmune disease) and I visited triage on a few occasions due to bleeding which turned out to be thrush!

And 1 incident at the end of not feeling baby move which was very traumatising for me (I was very anxious all through the pregnancy) and I convinced myself I was never going to meet my baby. I was kept in for observations once it was established that baby was ok. Again in triage everyone was lovely and didn’t make me feel like an anxious mess!

The next day I was induced and I had a very quick pregnancy. There was a little fright when delivery happened due to the shock of coming out so fast I think however all the doctors and nurses were amazing especially the student midwife who held my hand and baby arrived safe and well and we were on the ward in no time which was so peaceful and all the staff couldn’t do enough for us.

My baby is now 2 and I’m so grateful for him and all the staff at Wishaw maternity for looking after me at every stage of my journey. You all kept me going and making me feel like I wasn’t alone. My son thanks you all very much too.

Dear Suzed55,

What a lovely post and to remember the maternity unit when your son in 2 years of age is just wonderful!

I can see from your post that part of your experience has been very sad for you and your family and your next pregnancy journey was complicated. However I am delighted that you were looked after within all our maternity departments.

I will feed back all your comments to the staff at University Hospital Wishaw

Take Care and Best Wishes
