"Thank you but room for QI"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Accompanied my elderly mum in by ambulance through nhs 24, sudden onset chest pain.

Ambulance crew incredible.

Arrived to a queue of ambulances and ambulance crew discussed handover with duty consultant.

Into busy waiting room with morphine on board. Triaged after approximately 40 minutes.

Mum had cannula in situ, disconcerting to hear sn knew nothing about mum, no handover received and only asked if ambulance via a&e.

Subsequently seen by medics, slightly concerned about lack of hand hygiene, ppe and questionable technique in obtaining further bloods. Clearly very busy and under pressure.

Sent for xray and despite advising staff mum felt lightheaded, staff left her to change and walk into room without accompanying her.

Return visit to waiting room and 2nd visit to medics. Again, poor recognition of ipc and ppe and poor technique.

Glad to take mum home.

Totally appreciate pressures of a busy department but communication seemed to be ineffective and ipc concerns. NHSL, I am one of your team and am very grateful, but I can’t help feeling there is room for improvement - even my mum was questioning the practice of a length of transpore being stuck to the arm of a pt chair, cannula being removed without gloves and put in bin and said tape being used to secure a swab. No hand hygiene observed at any point in the visit: again, they were all doing a fabulous job under pressure but standards need to be maintained.

Overall though, great job. Thank you all for your support.

Dear ALZ,

Many thanks for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion. I am so sorry to read about what happened to your mum, I hope that she is feeling better. It is great to hear positive stories about the work our wonderful staff provide.

If you wish I can pass on the feedback to the crews directly. To do so we would need to know the date, time and address that the Ambulance attended and your mums name. This information can be sent to sas.feedback@nhs.scot for the team to pick up. If you do decide to do this, would you be so kind as to make reference to your CareOpinion username so that the team can easily locate your story and share it with the crew.

I wish you all the very best and thanks again.

Kind Regards

Alan

Dear ALZ

Thank you for sharing your experience of UHW ED.

I am sorry to hear of the lack of communication and hand hygiene you observed during your mums attendance at A&E. I am disappointed to read of the experience you and your mum had and we expect high standards to be upheld at all times, even when busy and it is not acceptable if this has slipped on this occasion.

I will ensure this is fed back to the correct team and action to rectify this taken

I hope your mum is recovering well

Kind Regards for submitting your feedback

Jen
