"Why are we not seen in order of appointments?"

About: Stepping Hill Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I think that a better system needs to be worked out for when pregnant women go for a scan and then go into the Antenatal Clinic (ANC). My understanding is that we all have appointment times and it does not run as a triaged system. But every time (and I mean every time), I have a scan then come over to ANC, I see ladies called in ahead of me to see the consultant, but their scans were after mine.

The last time I came, I had my scan at 10:40 with ANC at 11:10, but was not called into clinic until 1:30. My visit therefore took over 3.5 hours. Meanwhile I was sitting in the waiting area watching streams of women be called in whose appointments were scheduled after mine. Why are we not seen in the order of our appointments?

Good afternoon,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us and I am sorry to read about the issues you faced at your recent visit to the Antenatal Clinic. I have shared your feedback with the Service Manager who has provided this response:

“The Antenatal Clinic is an Multidisciplinary team clinic so there are women seen by different members on the team depending on what they need.

Some women only need consultant, some scan and consultant, some women also need to be seen by the midwife. Some women may be here for a speciality clinic running alongside the main clinic so women may appear to be called in out of appointment time order but this is not the case (unless of acute clinical need). All notes are triaged by the midwives as to who they need to be seen by and channelled into the correct flow. I would like to apologise for the long wait times, clinics are all very busy and women can often be here for some time if they need scan/midwife/consultant. We try our best to run as close to time as possible but if complications arise, this can delay clinic.

If a woman has concerns on the day and feels she has been missed, we would encourage this be raised with the reception staff as soon as possible.”

If you would like this to be looked into further, you can contact myself on Patient.Experience@stockport.nhs.uk and we can support you with this.

Kind regards,

Aoife Isherwood
