"Breastfeeding support team"

About: Lothian Community Services / Community Maternity Team

(as a service user),

Delivering Early Breastfeeding Support West Lothian (DEBS) were a help for me after my son was born and we struggled to have him feed from me. That was nearly two years ago. I'm happy to say, after working with many professionals and peer supporters, he latched at four months old and is still feeding now at over 20 months.

It was unfortunate at the time they couldn't work weekends or bank holidays, my son was born at Christmas time.

I myself am now a trained volunteer peer supporter. Recently a mother told me she was given outdated advice by the DEBS team in the last few weeks. She had been told not to switch sides so baby gets the 'hindmilk'. This is outdated information and worries me, mothers could be left with lower supply not offering both sides to baby. I'm hoping by posting this the members of the DEBS team who have been giving outdated advice seek and update on their training to protect breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

Thank you for the work you do.

Thank you for your feedback regarding care received from the DEBS team. Firstly, I would like to say I am delighted to hear about the outcome of your own feeding journey and that you are now using the skills and knowledge learnt from that that to support other families with their feeding journeys.

I am sorry to hear that a mother you met had been given information that you felt was not correct. Unfortunately, without a full feeding history it is difficult to know what would have been the correct plan of care for this family. To enable us to do that, it would be helpful if the family involved could contact the Patient Experience Team who will pass on their details to the team so we can look at their feeding plan and consider any staff training needs. The individuals involved can email on LOTH.feedback@nhs.scot, or tele 0131 536 3370, Mon-Fri, 9-2pm.

Thank you for contacting us and for supporting families on their breastfeeding journey as a peer supporter.
