My labour was fairly complicated, with some pre existing medical conditions which I felt well supported with. I ended up having a caesarian, which all went smoothly. My issues came after and I ended up having low levels of oxygen due to inflammation from the surgery putting pressure on my lungs. This was all handled effectively and I felt in safe hands, but I was experiencing excessive shaking (once the painkillers wore off) and I was told this due to the above.
Once my oxygen levels became in safe levels, after 6 days in hospital I was discharged but I was still experiencing excessive shaking and generally not feeling great, but because I wasn't showing a temperature I was still let go. The doctor told me I had high white blood cells, but this was not investigated at all. I do not have a spleen so anything related to infections can be serious.
Over the next week I mentioned this to the several midwives who visited, but again this wasn't investigated and I was told it was just a side effect from when the painkillers were wearing off. I was also having trouble breastfeeding and was in a lot of pain.
A week later I finally showed a temperature (I now know that all the painkillers were masking the temperature) and ended up back in maternity triage, and had to have IV antibiotics with an overnight stay.
I'm unsure and frustrated that even though I don't have a spleen, it was not picked up that I had an infection (mastitis - which I ultimately ended up getting 6 times) and was sent away or ignored time and time again.
I would like to praise the labour, surgery and Fife Breastfeeding Support team, I felt well supported. But the after care was really shocking. The GP kept giving me the same antibiotics, only after 5 times was I given a different antibiotic to try which eventually worked. I'm still unsure as to why my white blood cell count wasn't investigated whilst still in hospital, knowing I didn't have a spleen, and I was still discharged.
