"All the medical staff are amazing"

About: Glasgow Dental Hospital and School / Paediatric Dentistry - Level 5

(as the patient),

I fell off my bike and my face went into the kerb. I was screaming and my two front teeth had fell out. We went to Crosshouse hospital where they managed to glue them back in. Since then I’ve had root canal treatment and extensive treatment on my teeth. Unfortunately I have had to loose my two front teeth to preserve my gums for when I’m older. It happened when I was 8.

Last month I had to have my second tooth removed plus treatment on my gums to remove some bone. I was very scared but I knew I didn’t want to go for sedation so I chose to have it done with just jags. I was scared but I knew that I could trust Mairead as she makes me feel safe and always looks after me.

The procedure lasted  just over two hours with me having 12 jags to keep my numbness topped up. I got my new Essex retainer plus a new plate. It took a wee while for the stitches to come out and now I am so happy with my new teeth and my new smile. I’m so glad that I got it done now.

All the medical staff are amazing. Mairead and Gillian are my favourites. I can’t remember everyone’s name but Beth was also lovely and so was Lilian who sat and talked to my mum during my procedure as she was very nervous and worried.

I know that I am up at the dental hospital till I’m an adult but I just want you all to know that you are all amazing and thanks for always making me feel special.

Dear Jaic139,

I am so sorry to hear of your accident, you must have been very upset after such a frightening experience. Loosing teeth in these circumstances is very traumatic indeed, especially at eight years old.

On deciding to have your tooth and some bone removed without sedation sounds like a young person who has thought about what would work best for you. The team in Paediatric Dentistry always like to include young people in decisions about their care. I am so pleased that it went well and Mairead made you feel safe and looked after.

We need to look after Mums too at a time like this and it seems like Lilian did a good job. It sounds as if you are very happy with the result’s too, that’s really great.

I will pass on your lovely comments to Mairead, Gillian, Beth and Lilian. I know they will be delighted that you took time to tell us all about your care.

Very best wishes,

Fiona
