"Hysteroscopy procedure"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I when in cancer pathway after having two ultra scans which shown lump on uterus in December 2022 at the Royal Oldham hospital. I wasn’t prepared for the procedure and leaflet stated only have mild pain and to take some mild painkiller two hours before which I did.

I proceded with the procedure and it was too painful. I am a tough cookie and this was too much for me. My friend was with me and she never ever saw me like this before even in child birth. I was so scared I had cancer I proceeded and I am post menopausal and have severe atrophy.

The doctor said they couldn’t see anything and because of the atrophy was unable to take biospy. The whole exeperience I can only explain was a nightmare and after all that I then was sent for MRI to check nothing was there. This I had to chase up the results to be told I was clear.

Now to present day I had symptoms since 2022 and was too afraid since this torture of procedure to get medical help. Now they see I have thick lining of womb and need this procedure again. I have told my GP and the hospital I will not go ahead with this procedure without GA but they said they can not do this until I seen the Dr to tell them I can not tolerate this without GA and they will probably make  me another appointment. Which to me is a waste of resources and delays my diagnosis.

I feel I have to go to be bullied into procedure without GA but I will not, despite me telling them from the beginning I want GA. I think it is discrimination on women. I pray better less painful procedures are not carried out in women just to say a few bob.

Dear Jael

We were sorry to hear that you felt you had a poor experience when you attended for a Hysteroscopy due to not having enough information and inadequate pain relief.

All feedback is important to us, and we take your comments very seriously. Our aim is to always deliver high-quality person-centred care and we are disappointed you did not feel this was not the case. We are concerned you are reluctant to have future treatment as you feel this will only be offered without a general anaesthetic.

As you comment is anonymous it is difficult for us to comment further, therefore we encourage you to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) either via 0161 778 5665 between 09:30 hours and 16:30 hours Monday to Friday, drop into one of the PALS offices on each hospital site, or email: pals@nca.nhs.uk. Your care episode can then be identified and allow the specialist team to listen to your concerns and work together so a suitable treatment plan can be agreed upon.

In the meantime, we will forward your comments to the senior leadership team for them to review and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards

The Patient Experience Team
