After following guidance from the NHS and WHO, I believe that breastfeeding is the best way to provide nutrition for my child. Unfortunately after my baby was born, I found it extremely difficult to breastfeed my child due to a number of reasons. The community midwife who visited my home advised me to contact the breastfeeding support team. The breastfeeding support team visited me at my home where they helped me get the perfect set up, and they helped me find the position that was right for my baby. For the first time since my baby was born, I was able to feed my baby properly. The breastfeeding support team visited me on other occasions to help me with different positions to feed my growing baby, and when experiencing issues with nipple blisters, milk blebs and mastitis they checked how I would latch my baby and offer advice on how to resolve the issues.
In the beginning I was totally lost, feeling inadequate that I wasn’t able to feed my child and was almost ready to give up since I didn’t want my baby to starve. I cannot thank the breastfeeding support team enough for helping me through one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever faced in my life. I’m now confidently still exclusively breastfeeding my child 5 months later and plan to continue for around 2 years. I take comfort knowing that if I do have any further challenges in the future that the breastfeeding support team are just a phonecall away.
A special thank you to Bonnie and Collete who seen me on my darkest days and turned around my whole breastfeeding experience to be positive.
