"The good and the bad"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical) Victoria Hospital / General Medicine Victoria Hospital / Rapid Access and Discharge

(as a relative),

My sister in law and mother in law were admitted in the same night to AUI in the Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy. The care they received in the ward was exemplary. Mum did not need to be hospital, however the holistic care shown was excellent, the laptop with the old songs was a super touch.

However,  mum went to Ward 9 for 2 nights to await a care home. Husband went to collect her and she was dirty and unkempt and staff appeared disinterested. Staff did not even offer to  help him down to the car despite him having a zimmer, a stick, 2 bags and pushing a chair.

Special thanks to the 2 ambulance technicians who kindly helped him as they saw he was struggling, and got mum safely and into the car. He is just sorry he never caught the ladies' names.

Thank you also to the team in Ward 51, again, excellent care and kindness.

I have already submitted a concern to Patient relations re Ward 9. As a nurse for a very long time , it’s sad to witness a lack of care and compassion. Huge thanks to the AU1 staff however for showing that to both.

Dear Karxn78,

Many thanks for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion. I am so sorry to read about what happened to your sister-in-law and mother-in-law. That must have been worrying having them both admitted in the same night. I hope that they are both feeling better and on the road to recovery.

It is great to hear positive stories about the work our wonderful staff provide and even better to hear that our staff continue to make the efforts to help people when they see them requiring some help. It might be difficult to locate the names of the staff if there were a good few crews in the hospital at that point but I would really like to try. If you wish for this to happen would you be able to email sas.feedback@nhs.scot and provide the date and perhaps rough time that they would have been helping? If not don't worry about it, I can still share with the management teams in Fife. If you do decide to do this, would you be so kind as to make reference to your CareOpinion username so that the team can easily locate your story as it may not be me that picks it up.

I wish you all the very best and thanks again.

Kind Regards

Alan

Dear Karxn78,

Thank you for taking time to share your experience with us. It certainly sounds like you and your family have had a very difficult, and challenging time lately.

I am very saddened to read of your experience in Ward 9 - this is not the standard of care that we aim to deliver. The level of care that you have described does not meet our expectations, and is very disappointing.

I have discussed your concerns with the Senior Charge Nurse and as such we would welcome the opportunity to meet with you as this will allow us an opportunity to identify learnings. On behalf of the team in Ward 9, I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for a lack of care, and consideration that your mother and family have experienced.

Your complaint will be shared with the team to increase awareness of your experiences and the impact that this has.

Regards, Lisa
