I chose the Royal Surrey as an out of area patient due to many issues at many of the hospitals in my area who are atrocious at providing for and understanding the needs of autistic patients. I had hoped for different at the Royal Surrey considering its good reputation.
I travelled 200 miles for a mid morning urology appointment, which for someone who is autistic, disabled and has chronic illness was a massive undertaking and this took everything out of me.
The hospital were aware of the distance involved and my autism.
I received a telephone call about an hour before my appointment when I was 10 miles from the hospital informing me that my appointment had been cancelled and could I make it on Friday instead.
Obviously this was not possible.
Absolute no consideration for the needs of patients who are impaired and have neurodiversity. An alarming lack of understanding and awareness. An egregious lack of responsiveness and flexibility and overall grotesquely incompetent management of the urology department.
Autistic patients have a right to expect that the NHS take their needs seriously and respond flexibly and appropriately to the problems caused by the hospital when they have the capacity to significantly affect the access to healthcare of autistic people and their health and wellbeing.
Abhorrent treatment of an autistic patient that goes beyond any comprehension.
