"Sick Kids Edinburgh Play Therapy"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Lochranza Ward Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Play Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My youngest son, was admitted to the Lochranza Ward in Sick Kids, Edinburgh, following a totally unexpected cancer diagnosis.

Given the speedy nature of my son's diagnosis, the fact he was feeling well, and his young age, the idea of explaining his diagnosis, and particularly the treatment, to him was overwhelming.

Emily, the play therapist in the ward has been a godsend. Emily’s naturally calming and caring nature as well as her ability to speak to him on the right level has blown us away.

There is no doubt in our minds that were it not for Emily, my son would be highly distressed and anxious about the treatments to come. Instead, Emily has taught him just how brave he is.

Emily’s knowledge and honesty about how he might feel during and after medical procedures has gained his trust.  He knows his mum and dad will say everything will be ok - he knows Emily will tell him the truth and the way she does it is spot on.

The activities Emily has provided my son with have been just right for his age and stage, and have all been appropriate for a kid who is spending a lot of time in a hospital bed.  That said, the wonderful playroom and uplifting garden which Emily oversees have tempted him out of his hospital room whenever he feels well enough.  The short walk to the playroom and the garden feels like an achievement for my son and is a break for him and for us from the confines of his room.

Emily works very closely with the doctors and nurses on the ward and is aware of each and every procedure and treatment he is due to have. Her role compliments and enhances the excellent medical care perfectly.

Dear papajd59,

Thank you so much for taking the time to post such positive and complimentary feedback about your experience on Lochranza ward, in particular, regarding the work that Emily the play therapist has done with your son.

It is lovely to hear the positive difference that this has made to his and your experience in hospital during what must have been one of the most difficult times in your lives. Using effective play methods and distractions for children are vital to support the nursing and medical staff to deliver the care needed. Emily has clearly managed to accomplish this with your son at just the right level and built a level of trust that is vital, especially on a ward like Lochranza.

It's also lovely to hear your positive comments about the garden, which is something that I know Emily is very involved with and is always trying to look at any enhancements to make the most of the space for all the children on Lochranza.

I will make sure that your comments are fed back to Emily and the rest of the team. I would also like to wish you and your son well as he continues to bravely go through his planned treatment.

Best wishes

Nicola Davison (Clinical Nurse Manager)
