My mother had been referred to a consultant following a GP visit to see her in her care home and a subsequent stool sample test result. This information was only shared with me after this date.
When i arrived to the appointment to be with my mother i was informed by her care home that her transport had been cancelled after they went to the wrong care home. I asked to speak to the consultant to find out what the appointment was about as at this time i didn't know the details. The nurse was very friendly and listened to my concerns about knowing nothing about the appointment and that my mum had dementia and said she would ask the consultant if he would speak to me.
She came back to tell me the consultant did not want to speak to me unless my mother was in attendance. I informed her that i had full power of attorney and and that my mum might not have the full capacity to understand what the consultant may say to her and she may get distressed with the news he may have to share with her.
The nurse listened to my concerns and understood them but she reaffirmed what the consultant said about not wishing to speak to me unless my mother was present. I would have to wait and see the next consultant at the rearranged appointment.
A new appointment has been rearranged for a few weeks time, during which time i would imagine my mother's health to deteriorate further and her confusion levels to increase. I feel that at the very least i should have been informed by the GP surgery about this appointment and the consultant should have spoken to me or allowed me to tell him how my mother may deal with any news he may have to give her.
"I should have been informed"
