"I debated leaving and walking out"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Short Stay Medicine

(as the patient),

I was a patient here and honestly I debated leaving and walking out which would leave me to suffer the intense pain I am experiencing myself. I'm autistic and I handle pain different from others. I try distract myself with sound and movement. My pain was unbearable and some of the nurses were amazing, but one was not. I was having difficulty going to the toilet and when I told the nurse it wasn't working - they laughed and just said to try turning the tap on and sitting there.

Later that evening I was again in unbearable pain and I tensed up. I didn't want to speak I wanted to work through it, I knew I'd already been given painkillers. The first two nurses were amazing and gave me time. Then the same one from earlier showed up and commented that they'd seen me do this the day before, and that it was "ridiculous", then walked away.

On returned said I needed to speak instead of making sounds and tensing. I then overheard them say in a offputting tone to others that I had already been given paracetamol - I was aware of this.

I would rather have been at home and suffered myself than deal with the unkindness on this ward. I wanted home.

Dear Rexal

I am saddened to hear of your experience in short stay medicine and can understand how distressing this must have been for you. It is not what we would want any patient to experience whilst under our care.

I will share this feedback with the short stay medicine team. Unfortunately as your feedback is anonymous I am unable to give direct feedback however if you would like to share more information with me I can investigate fully.

You can email tay.feedback@nhs.scot or lindaa.nicol@nhs.scot with your details if you would like to.

I hope that you are more comfortable now and that your pain is subsiding.

Once again I am very sorry for the upset we caused during your hospital stay.

Kind Regards

Linda Nicol
