I had just had my fourth baby and having breast fed three other babies thought I would have no issues. However, baby really didn’t latch well and unbeknownst to me was suffering from jaundice and we had to go back in due to being underweight and high jaundice levels at 5 days old.
Baby had to have light therapy within an incubator for a couple of days. I was very distressed as she had to be fed through a tube and I had to use a shield and pump in between so baby was still getting my milk. I was convinced baby wouldn’t be able to latch properly and I would either have to use a shield or resort to bottles. However I contacted breastfeeding support Fife and they provided me with a pump for coming home and telephone support whilst I was in the hospital.
They were so reassuring, no pressure just very supportive. When I got home they came out to visit often, they helped me with my latch but also kept reassuring me whilst I was using the shield. Their advice and support was so valuable and baby eneded up latching within a few weeks and we are still feeding now, nearly one year on. They are always at the end of the phone if I have any questions and concerns and I have only felt support and kindness from them, no judgment which is so important when you are postpartum.
