"Lack of Changing Places toilet at Westmarc"

About: WestMARC (Glasgow)

(as a parent/guardian),

My 11 year old daughter has been a regular visitor to Westmarc Glasgow for the past 8 years as a full time wheelchair user.

She needs a Changing Places toilet with a bench and hoist to have her personal care needs met and unbelievably Westmarc don’t have one of these facilities in their Glasgow building. The solution to this is to either change her on a plinth in a consulting room or to wait until after our appointment and walk over to the hospital. Neither of these options are dignified or pleasant for my daughter or the staff or the other clients coming into the room after us.

It is so disappointing that a service which exists to meet the needs of wheelchair users and amputees cannot meet their care needs when they are in for appointments which can be lengthy.

Our experiences with Westmarc OTs and bioengineers and reception staff have been nothing but outstanding and yet on every visit the shadow of possibly having to figure out how to deal with toileting is there.

I emailed Westmarc directly about a changing places toilet last November and received no response.

Thank for feedback regarding our toileting and changing facilities within WestMARC. We are sorry that your experience fell below what you would expect.

We are aware of the issue and have submitted plans to convert one of our consultation rooms to a patient toileting and changing area.

While this work is ongoing, other changing facilities are available at the Royal Hospital for Children at the QEUH campus. Please speak to a member of staff if you require support in locating these facilities.

We appreciate the inconvenience this causes you and other service users, but we hope you understand that we are doing our best to rectify this situation as quickly as we can.

Regards

Karl Lees,

Interim Clinical Lead

Update posted by KikkiDee (a parent/guardian)

Hi Karl, thanks so much for your response to my story about the need for a Changing Places toilet in Westmarc. It’s great to hear that plans have been submitted to convert a space into a CPT. Can you give me an update on what stage this is it now?

Thank you
