"The team helped and supported us throughout"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Respiratory Medicine

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had been suffering for many years with his asthma, he was slowly getting worse and was struggling to even walk up the stairs at times without getting out of breath. He was on numerous steroids for a long time and even ended up in intensive care. Ann and the team helped and supported my son and my family throughout.

My son's inflammation of his lungs was 400+, it was more than the machine so we don’t know exactly what the number was. He started on the mepo injection which done a little change but not much as he has 2 types of asthma, he has allergy asthma and Eosinophilic asthma. The team then decided to trial him on the dupixent injection which within 2 weeks his inflammation had went down dramatically. He was managing to take part in PE sessions at school and was even enjoying going to the gym.

My son's life has changed dramatically. He can swim underwater from one end of the pool to the other, can go running and even do gym sessions. His everyday life has changed so much and it’s wonderful to see him thriving. He works as a barista in a coffee shop and has recently passed all of his exams at school getting As, Bs and Cs. This is amazing as at one point he was hardly ever able to attend school with his asthma being so severe so he missed out on a lot of schooling.

I can’t thank everyone enough for all of their support and help with giving my son and all of us a normal life. I can now sleep at night and not have to worry that he might have an asthma attack or is struggling to breathe. We have a wonderful NHS team and I would just like to say you are  all amazing and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Dear Juliet82,

I am sorry to hear about your son's experience with his asthma but it is great to read that the injections have had a really positive effect. These drugs are really life changing!
