"Caring Therapy for PTSD"

About: Community Mental Health / Adult Psychological Therapies

(as the patient),

After a difficult & traumatic experience as a patient in hospital, I developed PTSD. I received phone counselling arranged by my employer but I was still left with terrible nightmares, awful physical symptoms, a deep mistrust of medical professionals & an inability to cope with some medical environments. It took 6 months from referral by GP to be seen by DAPTS. My Psychologist Ashley, was incredibly kind, caring and patient with me. She allowed me to start with phone appointments & progress to face to face, as I was very emotional & quite embarrassed by the physical symptoms that accompanied talking about the PTSD. I am grateful for the amazing empathy she showed for my situation. Without her gentle guidance & commitment to help me work through it, I would not have gotten to a place where I feel empowered to manage my symptoms & cope with living life with PTSD. I needed way more than the standard "10" appointments quoted on the DAPTS website & I was grateful that Ashley understood this and ensured that I received these extra sessions. I still have some work to do by myself on this journey to defeat the PTSD but I am in a much stronger position than I was & I now feel I have the skills & tools I need to tackle this.
